The Hong Kong Cantonese Opera Sun Wo Tong Company Limited

The Hong Kong Cantonese Opera Sun Wo Tong Company Limited(General Affairs Department)

Shortly after the establishment of the Chinese Artist Association of Hong Kong (CAAHK) in 1953, it was proposed to merge the three halls of Chik Fook Tong, Chuen Fook Tong, and Shen Shing Tong and form the General Affairs Department of the CAAHK. By 1985, The Hong Kong Cantonese Opera Sun Wo Tong Company Limited was formally registered, and it was not until then that the General Affairs Department became independent as one of the Affiliated Associations of CAAHK. The Board of Directors is held once every two years. Before becoming a limited company, the General Affairs Department did not offer any welfare to its members. Since 1985, the Department started to offer benefits and distribute $200 to each member at the end of the year, while each member has to pay a monthly membership fee of $2. In April 1983, the General Affairs Department organized a fundraising performance entitled Cantonese Opera Evening by Renowned Performers and Celebrities (紅伶名流閏秀粵曲歌唱晚會) in the City Hall and the then Chairman was Mr. Wong Yim. In 1985 (the year when the limited company was established), another fundraising performance was held in order to raise funds for purchasing a new club-house. The properties owned by the General Affairs Department include the current club-house (i.e. 4/F of Agatha House, 21 Ning Po Street, Yau Ma Tei, Kowloon), and a leased out unit located at Room 229, Wai Ching Shopping Centre, Wai Ching Street, Jordan Road, Kowloon. Most of the members of Sun Wo Tong are social elites and troupe managers. Currently, the number of members is less than 100. Under the opening policy of Mr. Ma Kwok-chiu, the then Chairman in 2003, who believed that all those who are willing to develop and invest in Cantonese opera should join Sun Wo Tong, the number of members is expected to increase.
