Hong Kong Cantonese Opera Hop Wo Tong Limited(Costumes and Props Department)
The history of organizations for workers of costumes for Cantonese Opera can be traced back to Ho Wo Tong and Chi Shing Tong under the Guangzhou Barwo Association over a century ago. Following the Eight-year War of Resistance against Japan, a Costume Trade Union was established in Guangzhou. However, the trade union back then did not gather or provide any welfare to its members. After the establishment of the Chinese Artist Association of Hong Kong (CAAHK) in 1953, Mr. Lee Wing-chiu’s home in Pak Hoi Street, used as the temporary office for the affiliated associations of CAAHK, was where the costume and props department was first listed. By 1961, when Mr. Ho Fei-fan was the Chairman, the Costumes and Props Department of the CAAHK, with around 80 to 90 members in total, was formally established. In June 1992, the Costume and Props Department was officially registered as the Hong Kong Cantonese Opera Hop Wo Tong Limited. There are currently over 90 members, and a unit on Parkes Street, Yau Ma Tei, is rented as the club-house of the Association.
The Board of Directors for the Costume and Props Department is elected by its members. The Board, re-elected once every two years, is now in its 17th session. The Board of Directors will send representatives to become members of CAAHK's Board of Directors and participate in the decision-making on all issues related to the CAAHK. Members of the Costume and Props Department are encouraged to join at their own will to offer help in whatever event as well as celebration of the Birthday of Grant Master Hua-guang organized by the CAAHK, its mother association.
