Yau Ma Tei Theatre Venue Partner Program "Cantonese Opera Young Talent Showcase 2022 – 23" returns with great success in July, sharing everything and hand in hand to inherit; hundreds of new talents perform with all their strength

To: Editors and editorial directors of major media

" Cantonese Opera Young Talent Showcase " launched by The Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong has trained hundreds of Cantonese opera rookie actors in the past ten years. This year, The Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong continues to receive strong support from Cantonese Opera Development Fund and Leisure and Cultural Services Department, and will stage more than one hundred Cantonese opera performances at the Ko Shan Theatre New Wing Auditorium, cultivating successors for the Cantonese opera industry both on stage and behind the scenes.

A lot of fun begins in July

This project has reached another milestone this year. In the past ten years, it has created countless successful performances for theater fans. In addition to the dedicated efforts of the front and backstage staff, we also want to thank all the theater fans for their strong support. This year, a total of 68 evening Cantonese opera performances will be staged from July 2022 to January 2023, and a series of promotional performances and activities will be launched. The performances throughout the year are divided into five performance periods. The first performance period (Performance Period 1) is from July 12 to 25, 2022 (see the attached table for program details), with a total of 7 different plays and a total of 14 performances.

Famous opera treasures welcome new performances - "Crazy Phoenix and Mad Dragon" and "Nine Heavenly Mysteries"

This year's opening performance was led by artistic director Lung Koon-Tin who once again brought the famous drama "Crazy Phoenix and Mad Dragon" to theater fans. He led several rookies such as Kwan Kai-shan, Wen Xueqiu, Pei Junxuan, Lin Weiting, Guo Junheng, Yuan Yinghua and other newcomers to perform. The suspenseful approach explores ethics, the plot is compact, and the climax is repeated. The audience must carefully appreciate the performances presented by the rookie actors. This year's opening has also been specially arranged to perform an additional example play "The Great Prime Minister of the Six Kingdoms". "The Great Prime Minister of the Six Kingdoms" is full of pomp and circumstance, and the scene is grand. Two years ago, our association rehearsed this play, which was performed by a group of emerging actors. Unfortunately, due to the epidemic, it had to be canceled. Therefore, we arranged to perform it again this year to give back to our loyal theater fans. The audience must not miss it.

This performance period also brings you "Mysterious Lady", which is the first play to be performed at Cantonese Opera Young Talent Showcase. Ms. Wan Fei-Yin serves as the artistic director. Two young emerging actors, Liang Zhenwen and Liang Feitong, work together to bring you the love story of the painter Ai Jinglang and his daughter Leng Shuangchan written by Mr. Tang Disheng until death. The story is adapted from the Fujian folk tale "Lychee for Pink Peach". The two lovers turned into divine companions after experiencing human suffering, which is enviable.

Through more than a hundred Cantonese opera performances each year, guided lectures, special performances for students and multiple promotional activities, the plan is to demonstrate the capabilities of Hong Kong's Cantonese opera emerging actors to the audience, and to attract more young audiences, allowing young audiences to appreciate the truth, goodness and beauty of this traditional Chinese art, and to carry forward this local intangible cultural heritage.
