Episode 9 Singing: Yiwong Sanban (二黃散板) (2)

"You sing Bongzi (梆子) when you win, you sing Yiwong when you lose" .Being one of the two major systems of singing styles in Cantonese opera, "Yiwong" is featured with a relatively bleak and desolate melody. In this episode, we will introduce and demonstrate "Yiwong Sanban". Yiwong Gwanfa is also known as "So-Re Gwanfa " (合尺滾花). The sentences can be in seven or ten words. Action sentences can also be added in this kind of singing style. "Gwanfa" is characterized by its melody without "Dingban" (叮板) and the singing before music. The actor will sing first, then the music would mimic the melody he sung, making an echoing effect.
